Ozempic and other similar drugs have dominated the headlines in the last year. Opinions on both sides are strong – on one hand claiming their power as a miracle drug to beat the obesity crisis, while on the other sounding alarms about potential negative side-effects and warning against viewing them as a quick fix.

Our expert panel assesses the impacts of weight loss injections on society and our physical and mental health, looking at the huge issue from different perspectives to offer a 360 degree view.

They’ll be considering if GLP-1 agonists are the solution to the obesity crisis and what pressures or benefits the spread of their use has on society. They'll explore how they affect our appreciation of the joy of food and cooking? Are they likely to be a long term solution that society should embrace? And do we yet fully understand what GLP-1 agonists / these drugs can do, their impact and roles in private and public health?

With endocrinologist Dr Tony Goldstone of Imperial College London who researches addictive behaviours in obesity including the influence of dietary, hormonal and pharmacological interventions; Professor Christina Vogel, Director of the Centre for Food Policy and Professor of Food Policy at City University of London; columnist Zoe Williams; and chartered psychologist Kimberley Wilson whose work looks at the role of food and lifestyle in nourishing our brain and mental health.

About the speakers

Dr Tony Goldstone is a Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in PsychoNeuroEndocrinology at the Department of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London, UK. He attended medical school at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and obtained his PhD from Imperial College London. His experimental medicine research examines body-brain interactions in regulation of eating and addictive behaviours, including effects of gut hormones and bariatric surgery. He is a Consultant Endocrinologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, running a specialist clinic for genetic obesity.

Professor Christina Vogel is the City, University of London Director of the Centre for Food Policy, Professor of Food Policy and a registered nutritionist. Her research aims to inform the development, implementation and evaluation of food policies and interventions to improve population health, reduce inequalities and protect our planet. Some of her current projects include product placement trials with a national supermarket chain, evaluations of the UK Government’s Food (Promotions and Placement) legislation and the Healthy Start scheme, and systems investigation of the UK convenience store sector. Christina’s research has informed local, national and international policy documents including the House of Lord’s Select Committee reports on Food, Diet and Obesity and Food, Poverty, Health and the Environment, the WHO European Region’s 2022 report on obesity and local authority plans. Her work has received national and international press coverage, and she is Deputy Editor of the scientific journal Public Health Nutrition.

Zoe Williams has been a columnist on the Guardian since 2000 – previously, she wrote a column for the London Evening Standard. She contributes to various magazines and news weeklies, including In Style, Stylist, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, The Spectator and Grazia. Broadcasting includes Question Time, the DailyPolitics, The Politics Show and Newsnight for the BBC; Dispatches and the ChannelFourNews for Channel Four; AllOutPolitics and Sunrise for Sky News; and appearances on the TodayProgramme, AnyQuestions, Woman’sHour, PM and the WorldTonight for BBC Radio Four. She is the author of three non-fiction books, Get it Together: Why We Deserve Better Politics, The Madness of Modern Parenting and Bring It On, Baby, contributor to three further books, The Alternative, Serendipity and All Together Now.

Kimberley Wilson is a Chartered Psychologist, with a master’s degree in nutrition and the author of How to Build a Healthy Brain and Unprocessed. A former Governor of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Mental Health Trust, Kimberley led the therapy service at HMP & YOI Holloway, which at the time was Europe’s largest women’s prison. Her philosophy of Whole Body Mental Health is a comprehensive approach to mental health care; integrating evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle factors with psychological therapy with an emphasis on nutrition and the brain. Kimberley has written for BBC Science Focus and PsychologiesMagazine, hosted the podcast Made of Stronger Stuff and the scientific segment of One Dish both on BBC Radio 4, appeared regularly on Lorraine ITV and been the featured mental health expert on several Channel 4 series and documentaries.

Attending your event

Please note that this event takes place at Pavilion Theatre, on the piazza of the British Library, London and is also available to watch online. Tickets may be booked to attend in person, or to watch on our platform either live or during the next 7 days on catch up.
