Author, journalist and broadcaster Jimi Famurewa is joined by cooks, food writers and restaurateurs Roopa Gulati, Jenny Lau, Julie Lin to discuss ideas of food as a source of emotional solace and grounding.
They take the varied perspectives of eating, cooking and feeding to examine what food as comfort means across different families, communities, cultures and situations.

About the speakers
Jimi Famurewa is a British-Nigerian author and broadcaster. His writing has appeared in the Guardian, Wired, GQ, and Observer Food Monthly. He is the former restaurant critic for the Evening Standard, regular guest judge on the BBC One series MasterChef and was also one of the lead judges on Channel 4’s The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver. He hosted the award-winning podcast Where’s Home Really?, and, in 2021, he won Restaurant Writer of the Year at both the Fortnum & Mason Awards and the Guild of Food Writers Awards. His first book, Settlers: Journeys through the Food, Faith and Culture of Black African London, was published in 2022 and was shortlisted for Foyles Non-Fiction Book of the Year. @jimfamished
Roopa Gulati is all about making the most of Indian spices in your own kitchen. Brought up in Cumbria, she crossed continents and worked as a chef in New Delhi's kitchens, where she cooked in huge hotels, street bazaars, palace kitchens, TV studios and on stoves across India. Now based in London, Roopa continues to create recipes, write about food and share her skills with fans of regional Indian cooking. Indian Kitchens is her second book. @roopagulati
Jenny Lau is a writer, community organiser and luncheon club chef at the East and Southeast Asian Community Centre in Dalston. She created Celestial Peach in 2018 as a platform to tell stories about Chinese food in the diaspora, and the people and cultures behind it. Her debut non-fiction book An A-Z Of Chinese Food (Recipes Not Included) is an anthology that uses food to explore who we are and how we relate to the world. @celestialpeach_uk
Julie Lin is a Malaysian-Scottish chef, writer, TV presenter and restauranteur. GaGa, her Glasgow restaurant, is Michelin recommended and was named Best Restaurant in Scotland in 2022. She has appeared on Saturday Kitchen, The Hairy Bikers Go Local and Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil, and cooked for Judi Dench on Country File. Julie has also contributed to the Guardian, Observer, BBC Good Food and Vice. She has a Substack and accompanying podcast, Use Your Noodle. In 2024, Julie was named Food Influencer of the Year at the Golden Chopsticks Awards and was named Women of Influence’s Woman to Watch. @julielincooks
