Join us at the London premiere of The Immortal Sisterhood LIVE in the grand Entrance Hall of the British Library as a new book by award-winning broadcaster and writer Gemma Cairney comes to life in an extraordinary fusion of art forms. The Immortal Sisterhood LIVE blends movement, readings, sound, song and strings in a captivating stage show with an intuitive, futurist and feminist perspective.

From Grace Jones and Mary Wollstonecraft to Pharaoh Hatshepsut and Wang Zhenyi, the constellation of The Immortal Sisterhood and their stories – even in the face of racism, sexism, illness or war – all offer something different to guide us through life, and to create our own stories.

Plus special guests, stalls and more and DJs to close.

Two performances. Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September.

The event will be partially seated, with standing areas. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis with priority for those less able to stand.

  • Gemma Cairney

    Gemma Cairney is an award-winning broadcaster and writer, her career at the BBC having spanned over a decade.

    Her first book Open (Macmillan, 2017) was a young adult guide to life and saw her tour across the UK. She is a regular contributor to audio and written anthologies, has judged the Wellcome Prize and hosted the Booker shortlist readings as well as many other literary talks. The Immortal Sisterhood is her first book for adults.

    A Jones is Director, Composer and Collaborator for The Immortal Sisterhood Ensemble.

    A is a Soul Escort, professional Intuitive and Ritualist facilitating healing and teaching esoteric spiritual praxis globally for the past 7 years. As a sound artist, their performances draw audiences into cathartic reflections, weaving multi-form synesthesia and devotion to animism with sonic echoes of their former study as a coloratura soprano. A is currently based in Gabrielino-Tongva Nation land (also known as Southern California).

  • Mele Broomes

    Mele Broomes is Director, Movement and Collaborator for The Immortal Sisterhood Ensemble.

    Mele is an artist and director in movement, performance, choreographer & vocal experimentation. Her most recent work through warm temperatures opened the 20th anniversary of Edinburgh Art Festival, the UK’s largest annual festival of Visual Art. Mele's live work and video work has been presented at venues and festivals such as Battersea Art Centre London, Theatre Centre Canada, Cultura Inglesa Festival Brazil, The Place London, Take Me Somewhere, White Chapel Gallery, Daughter of Cups, Festival del Silenzio Milan, Edinburgh Fringe, Art Night, Dance International Glasgow, Re:Generations, Fest en Fest, CONTACT Manchester and Dundee Rep Theatre. She is co-founder-director of Project X Dance (2017–2021), founder and director of Body Remedy, Board member of Take Me Somewhere and Advisory Committee member for Project X.

  • Roxanne Tataei

    Roxanne Tataei is Director, Composer and Collaborator for The Immortal Sisterhood Ensemble.

    Roxanne Tataei is a voice artist, composer and writer from South London, UK. Roxanne’s recent works see her creating non-linguistic, Neo–opera and vocal centred music. She has received an MTV Europe music Award nomination, has been listed as part of the BBC sound poll & has toured worldwide extensively, supporting the likes of Florence & The Machine and Grace Jones. Roxanne has worked with several noted institutions such as the V&A Museum, The Royal Albert Hall and The National Portrait gallery. She has also received commissions in a wide range of projects including Mica Levi & Dean Blunt contemporary opera ‘Inna’ (ICA) and BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Sound Odyssey’ series, where she travelled to Stornoway, Scotland to collaborate with traditional Gaelic Psalm singers, learning an ancient art form on the decline. Roxanne has scored original soundtracks for Gucci commissioned Film 'WATA' Directed by Ronan Mckenzie & Joy Yamusangie, (Best Music at The Fashion Film Festival Milano) & for multidisciplinary artist Rebecca Bellantoni’s piece, ‘You have any peace for me? C.R.Y’, commissioned by the Brent Biennial.

  • Simone Seales

    Simone Seales is Director, Composer and Collaborator for The Immortal Sisterhood Ensemble.

    Originally from Florida, Simone Seales is a Glasgow-based cellist and performance artist. They focus on improvisation, interdisciplinary collaboration, poetry, and devising music for theatre. Through their collaborative and creative process, they prioritize play, silliness, and connection. Simone is passionate about exploring sound, how sound can reflect emotional states of being and how emotions are embodied. Their creative influences come from Black feminist leaders such as Audre Lorde, Assata Shakur and bell hooks. Within Simone's creative work, they centre Blackness, sexuality, intersectional feminism and anti-racism. They believe Western Classical musicians are capable of making meaningful social change.

Concessions

There are a range of concessions available. These include discounts for British Library Members, Young Persons (16–25s), and visitors on Universal/Pension Credit and free entry for carers.
